We understand that it can be expensive as a student to afford a gym membership or find the time to go to the gym with your busy schedule.
Sometimes, the hardest part about going to the gym is finding the motivation to get yourself there. That is why many of our properties have on-site gyms which are fully equipped so you can work out whenever you wish to.
Even those that don’t have on-site workout facilities are located conveniently near to local gyms and chances are, your university will have a gym for you to use.
It’s worth looking into which gym is right for you and what kind of facilities are best suited to you.
The great part about keeping fit within your student accommodation is that you will be able to find a workout buddy who you can go to the gym with, which makes exercise fun!
2. Create A Workout Space
Working out in your room can be just as effective as a gym workout, it can even be better for you especially If working out Infront of people makes you anxious.
We suggest making a good workout playlist on Spotify that will motivate you and get a yoga mat for your room. You can get other cheap fitness equipment like resistance bands, skipping rope, a kettlebell or set of dumbbells so you can lift at home.
We know gym equipment can be expensive sometimes so don’t overspend just look on Amazon and see what bits you can get, if you want to that is. You can still exercise without the need for equipment like doing sit-ups or jogging on the spot.
It can be hard to find the space for these when you live in a student flat, but as long as you don’t go overboard you should be fine! You can even use your flats communal space as a workout area and ask your flatmates to join in with a workout.
3. Make The Most Of Workout Videos
It can get boring doing the same exercise routine all the time, so videos are great at introducing you to new workouts whether it’s exercises to warm up, HIIT workouts, strength training classes, yoga or cardio home workouts.
They’re also great to watch if you’re a beginner to exercising at home and don’t know where to start.
There are plenty of at-home workouts you can do with YouTube videos or TikTok videos whether it’s watching a Joe Wicks class or a MadFit video.
Doing an easy 10-minute home workouts once a day or a few times a week can be a great way to keep fit at home, and there’s no faff involved!
There are tons of different videos available depending on how you want to exercise, you can even do dancing workouts – have a boogie and get your blood pumping!
There are even online classes available which is super convenient for the student lifestyle as you can fit them in with your day. There are tons of videos, apps and classes available, exercising at home has never been easier in the digital age!
Have a research and watch or download something new, you might find your new perfect workout.
4. Take The Stairs
Walking up flights of stairs can be a great way to keep fit and chances are, you’ve probably used the stair climber at the gym.
Stair climbing is a great full-body workout so, if you normally take the lift to your student flat if it’s on a higher floor then why not use the stairs instead? You’ll burn significant calories, and it is a great way to strengthen your legs.
We’re not saying climb 12 flights of stairs up to your flat every day, but if you’re able to it can be a great exercise which is easy to do!
5. Create A Workout Plan
Setting a plan for when you are going to work out and what you are going to do will make the process much easier. As you will have a routine to follow, and it will mean you are being consistent.
This will improve your willpower and motivate you to exercise more often, it’s always easier when we have a plan, just like with uni work!
It’s important to consider your fitness goals and be realistic about what you want to achieve, there’s no point expecting yourself to go from not working out at all to doing intense workouts daily, you need to start low and progress slowly.
6. Have A Balanced Diet
A large part of keeping fit comes from your diet, so make sure you eat and drink enough by eating at least 3 meals a day and having regular drinks.
You should be having 6-8 glasses of water per day; we know it can be hard to swap the soft drinks for a healthier option but it’s important your body is getting the fluids it needs.
Having a well-balanced diet is important as balanced meals will give you all the nutrients you need to stay, healthy.
It’s also important to make sure you don’t skip meals, as it is not good for weight management or your health.
We know, we’re guilty of it ourselves but try to cut down on the amount of junk food you eat.
Whether it is choosing to have a cooking night with your flatmates rather than ordering a takeaway or just trying to limit the number of crisps and chocolate bars you eat, it can help you to feel fitter and can also have a better impact on your bank account!
There are a variety of other ways you can keep fit as a student such as walking more, opting to walk to your lectures or seminars rather than getting the bus or getting an Uber.
Walking is a great way to improve your mood and stay healthy, and its super easy to do. You can even go on walks in the morning to start your day, put your headphones in and listen to a podcast or some music!
You should remember to go easy on yourself in terms of keeping fit at university, whilst it is important to stay active, don’t beat yourself up about it if you feel like you’re not doing ‘enough’.
